5 Tips to Keep Your Festive Flowers Looking Great All Christmas

This year, we’ve really embraced the magic of Christmas and still believe (more than ever) that the festive season can lift our spirits and sprinkle a little joy into our homes.

Seeing our wreaths adorn your homes and your pre-orders for bouquets and table centres ping in, we know you’re also planning to deck the halls with wild abandonment this year and we LOVE it!

So how to keep your fresh florals looking pristine and perky, right up until Christmas Day? Here are our top tips!

  1.  Don’t be Afraid to Trim

Trim at least a half inch of stem off any fresh, floral bouquet before you put them in a vase and each time you change the water. *Pro Florist Tip* - trim on the diagonal and snip vertically through the middle of each stem for maximum water absorption.

Not all flowers and foliage perish at the same rate. Don’t be afraid to prune and remove wilted items that have outlived their beauty, it will help the rest of your arrangement shine for longer.

  1. Make Misting a Must

After you've arranged your fresh decorations, regular misting every 1-2 days will help keep wreaths, garlands and table centres properly hydrated so they will last longer. If your home is very dry, adding a humidifier near the decorations can also help keep them moist and healthy.

  1. Keep it Fresh

We recommend changing the water in your vase every two to three days. Old water will quickly become polluted and filled with bacteria and this will hasten the dreaded wilt of your flowers. Make sure to wash your vase thoroughly before refilling and remember to add more flower food each time you change your water for added oomph!

  1. Dig Out That Duster

While it is true that dried flower arrangements and wreaths require less TLC than their fresh counterparts, they still need a little love and attention. Make sure you dust your designs regularly to keep them looking spick and span for longer. This is especially true for any houseplants which already battle so much in our homes over winter. Keeping their leaves light and dust-free will really give them a helping hand.

  1. Keep Your Cool

Cooler air will help keep your fresh, evergreen arrangements from drying out as quickly. If possible, avoid putting these decorations in a room with an active fireplace, and avoid positioning them in direct sunlight or near heating vents or other breezes or drafts. Moving the decorations outdoors or into a cooler area at night, such as into an unheated cellar or garage, can also help them stay fresh for much longer.
