Top Wedding Flower Trends for 2017
The summer wedding season may be coming to an end but winter brings new and exciting creative opportunities and we’re already starting to see some of our incredible floral creations take shape.
As The Wedding Industry’s Wedding Florist of the Year, keeping on top of the key trends and fuelling our passion for creativity is so important. Each year brings with it new looks and styles, and 2017 has been no exception! We often find that we take inspiration from many different genres. From leading RHS garden designs, to the runways of the world’s top fashion designers, we are surrounded by colour, texture and innovation. Likewise, these trends manifest themselves on Pinterest and in magazines, which means many brides come for their consultation full of ideas, inspired by what’s currently in vogue.
So, in this week’s blog I’ve decided to pull together my top 6 trends for wedding flowers, along with some photos showcasing the different looks. Let’s get started!
Breaking the Rules
Think large scale, unstructured bouquets with big blooms such as protea and giant succulents. Texture is really important too and foliage is a great way to create that free-form ‘about to burst’ look. This trend is a move away from the classic posy style and towards a real statement piece, with bold, loose designs that maximise shape and proportion and that aren’t too restrained by the rules.
Romantic Roses
Roses may be a classic choice, but with the emergence of spectacular varieties such as the show-stopping Avalanche Rose by Meijer, there are no small buds here! With their flawless, large headed blooms and romantic scent they are the perfect addition to the more natural looking bouquets and arrangements. And, it appears we’re not the only ones to love these exclusive roses, as they are the go-to flower for royal weddings, celebrity parties and luxury brand launches.
Going Green
With Greenery as Colour of the Year 2017, it’s no surprise that foliage plays a massive role in floral designs this year. Boston ferns, eucalyptus and smilax are popular choices and the more abundant the better! From swags and arches to wreaths and garlands, foliage creates great texture and abundance - perfect for creating real, organic drama!
Sky High
We love the trend for fairy-tale style hanging floral centrepieces. Whether from a vaulted ceiling or the apex of a tepee, these floating installations make the atmosphere feel magical. A large suspended arrangement, like a floral chandelier, can add instant wonderland drama, but it’s equally fabulous if floor or table space is limited. For example, an overhead table display is a great alternative to a classic table centrepiece.
Above and Beyond
Much like the trend for hanging displays, using flowers to create focal points, beyond the eye level, is an exciting development. Maximising space and creating depth is often done by introducing different levels to a design. For table centres this can be achieved by playing with different heights – from low rose bowls to vases of varying elevations to floating tea light holders. The right choice of flowers then helps to introduce the volume and colour needed to fill the space. It’s all about proportion and knowing how to trick the eye!
Winter 2017
We’re seeing the rise of rich, jewel tones. Unstructured designs remain on trend, but with an added opulence emerging.
Marsala colours and berries with echoes of red wine, aubergine and chocolate make the velvety richness of flowers such as dahlias and ranunculus a popular choice.
The key to any of these styles is to take inspiration from the trends but make them your own. No two weddings are the same, nor should your flowers be.
